Style Lessons to Learn From Timothée Chalamet

Style Lessons to Learn From Timothée Chalamet

Words by Axel Metz

When the cameras come calling, you can count on Hollywood’s golden boy to steal the show.

Whether sporting an oversized hoodie on a Manhattan sidewalk or a diamond-encrusted bib (sorry, ‘harness’) on the red carpet, Hollywood darling Timothée Chalamet is no stranger to the broad and often ridiculous spectrum of modern style.

VOGUE called him “the most influential man in fashion”, W magazine dubbed him “Hollywood’s best dressed” while Paper questioned the hype altogether (“he just wears designer duds”), but one thing is clear – Timothée Chalamet knows how to turn heads.

Here, we detail some of his sartorial secrets:

1. Long live the baseball cap

Simple, affordable, versatile. The trusty baseball cap has become a staple of American style to outlast the buckets hats and flat caps of the world. Chalamet can often be seen rocking various designer labels as well as your bog-standard denim and beige numbers, always managing to add a touch of streetwear flair to his typically-outlandish casual fits.

It’s also a handy way to hide from the paps, clearly.

2. It’s OK to tuck in your trouser legs

You can now tuck your trousers into your shoes, who knew? If you’re feeling really brave, you could even tuck them into your socks, as Timmy does on occasions. Granted, you probably need trousers worthy of tucking for this one, but it doesn’t hurt to know that fashion’s “most influential man” avoids looking like a clown when doing so.

3. Sequins aren’t just for girls

Much was made of Chalamet’s bedazzled Louis Vuitton harness at the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In fact, it pretty much broke the internet. But the sequins didn’t stop there. He would later be seen sporting a similarly-bejewelled hoodie (the product of 15,000 sequins, 3,000 crystals, and 30 hours of construction) at the UK premiere of The King. Obviously, your average Joe doesn’t have access to their own personal Virgil Abloh to produce bespoke wearables to pop to the shops, but these sparkly numbers go to show that the humble sequin is transcending gender boundaries.

4. Copy the floppy

It’s not the razor-sharp jawline, fancy clothes or genuinely stellar acting ability that sees fans flock to Chalamet in their droves – everyone knows it’s the hair. For the follically-challenged among us, this one is a little hard to replicate, but generously-applied shampoo and conditioner – not to mention a great deal of patience – has ensured Timmy’s barnet holds its place in celebrity folklore.

He may as well be called Timothée Tresemmé.

5. Sunglasses. Everywhere. All the time.

Apparently, sunglasses can be worn even in the absence of sun. Which is handy, because England’s winter months – or rather, all English months – offer little by way of solar rays. A pair of black Ray-Ban Wayfarers are a classic style staple easily worn alongside almost any outfit, and will likely see you through the rest of your adult life if cared for properly. Chalamet regularly demonstrates the benefits of opting for rounded frames to soften the hard angles in a square-shaped face, so if you’re blessed with an equally well-cut jawline, heed the same advice.

6. Sometimes, simplicity is king

For most of us, access to personal stylists and custom-made designer-wear is limited (unless you, too, are a multi-millionaire film star). Luckily, Chalamet proves that sometimes, the basics can be stylish all on their own. A plain white tee, a grey crew-neck sweater, a worn-out college hoodie – all suitably-fashionable garments in their own right if paired with a simple chain or pair of white trainers. Style without the price tag is real, and Timothée Chalamet is a fine example of how to break hearts without breaking the bank.
