Emerging British artist Reuben James is on a mission to make jazz cool again – and he’s succeeding.

Reuben James has fast become one of the most exciting acts to emerge onto the UK music scene. You may recognise him thanks to his ongoing collaborations with fellow British star Sam Smith – he co-wrote several songs on Smith’s multi-million-selling album, The Thrill of It All – but as a solo act, Reuben’s talent is a knockout. His smooth and soulful vocals combine with a refreshing modern jazz sound to keep audiences excited about what more this up-and-coming creative has to offer.

Raised in Birmingham, Reuben’s family were always very musical and creative. Listening to industry legends like Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra and Steve Wonder on vinyl was a regular occurrence in his household, and these artists served as an early source of inspiration to young Reuben, encouraging him to explore the immense talent of his own. His ability didn’t go unnoticed by his peers, and he managed to earn a scholarship to attend one of the most prestigious music schools in the UK, Trinity College.

Singing wasn’t the only talent Reuben discovered at a young age, though. He has played piano since the age of three, and now regularly incorporates the instrument into his own tracks – alongside the likes of trumpets, guitars and saxophones. It’s this amalgamation of sounds that makes Reuben’s music truly come alive, and – as cliché as it is – sets him apart from the crowd. This Birmingham-born star is in a lane of his own.

Reuben’s career has continued to skyrocket in the years since his musical debut, Adore, in 2019. With collaborations with artists such as Tori Kelly, Disclosure and Bruno Major under his belt, industry heavyweights now know of the talent that comes with his still-new name. In 2020, the star released his second EP, Slow Down, consisting of six tracks that Reuben once again didn’t fail to inject with his smooth jazz magic. The project even included some dreamy collaborations with other musical talents like Kevin Garrett, Vula and Chris Dave. As you can imagine, it was received well by fans and critics in the UK and beyond, and once again proved Reuben’s ability to shine as both a vocalist and composer.

If you’re ever in the mood to sit back, zen out and chill with some authentic jazz music, Reuben James is definitely an artist you should add to your playlist.
