Our Guide to This Summer’s Style Trends
Spread the love

Words by Hannah Shaw

As the sun finally makes an appearance, we pick out this season’s biggest and boldest style trends – for both guys and gals.

As recent months go, things are looking up. The sun is finally making an appearance, restrictions are slowly lifting and football is coming home (… right?). What better time, then, to refresh your wardrobe with this season’s latest trends?

Below, we round up the style tips to know this summer – from the new rules on jewellery to an unexpected footwear renaissance. And rest assured, we’ve been sure to include a mixture of sartorial advice for both guys and gals.

The more straps, the better

A relative of the trusty Birkenstock, this season’s hot shoe trend is all about the sporty sandal. This is arguably a love it or hate it trend (the marmite of sandals, you might say) but regardless, sporty sandals are making a comeback, with brands from The North Face to Gucci hopping on the trend. If you’re brave enough and live for the controversy, add some white socks into the mix, too.

Are Crocs cool again?

When it comes to the shoes to wear this summer, you might want to stick with the sporty sandals when you hear the next trend on our list. Yes – Crocs are back. Since Diplo’s collab with the brand – which follows a similar recent partnership with Justin Bieber – Crocs have been flooding our Instagram feeds, and the flashbacks to childhood are real. It also appears that the more outrageous the colour, the better, and adding some funky Jibbitz (yes, that’s the official term) only increases your street cred. You can make up your own mind about this one, but we’re here for the nostalgia.

Hitting the court

Ladies, grab your racquets because tennis skirts are back. The return is not surprising, though, after the ‘y2k’ trend earlier this year meant that anything the paps caught Britney in is now back on trend. The holy grail of the ultimate Pinterest outfit, pair it with an oversized vintage sweater and some chunky white trainers and you’re good to go.

Got an ugly shirt? You’re in luck

The ultimate holiday staple and often every guy’s weapon of choice whilst abroad: printed shirts have proven they’re here to stay once again. This year, however, they’re not just for the guys, with high-street brands like Urban Outfitters and ASOS providing the flarey trend for gals, too. For this one, though, we think your best bet is to hit the charity shops – the more scandalous the pattern, the better, after all.

Keep ‘em baggy

For guys and girls alike, it’s common knowledge nowadays that skinny jeans are a thing of the past. So, make sure you’ve got a pair or two of wide leg trousers to see you through the summer. Also, what better way to fully embrace the ‘90s vibe than by pairing them with an oversized t-shirt? For the ladies among us, baggy jeans look just as cool with a little crop top, too, so the choice is yours. And a bonus: all the extra airflow will keep you cool (this trend is a win win).

Chain reaction

We’ve known for a while, but jewellery is well and truly back on the style menu – particularly for guys. Whether we’re talking necklaces, chains, bracelets or rings, anodized metal has become the go-to accessory for any outfit type. Silver will always be the safest bet, but gold jewellery isn’t the red flag it once was, particularly when paired with white or black tees. Brands like AllSaints and Craftd offer a great selection of both.
