After a year of virtual awards, with awkward pauses and IT glitches, we’re all pretty relieved things are heading back to normal, starting with this year’s BET Awards 2021.
Given the misery and uncertainty of the last year, the BET Awards 2021 offered a little escape, a return to the days when red carpet moments filled the headlines, instead of a government minister’s pursuit of pleasure. Mind you, the event itself was not without politics. From outfit choices to speeches, stars lined up to tell their tales and inspire their fans. And most important of all, the show still contained the kind of stage-lighting, back-up dancing and effect-filled performances we’ve come to expect and love.
With that, we thought it’d be good to round up the biggest and important moments of the show – because, why not?
Cardi’s Pregnancy
You see, when you’re Cardi B, a simple announcement letter won’t do. If like her, your name is the subject of huge excitement, you’ve got to do things with a certain extravagante significado. So, when it came to news of her pregnancy, there was only one way to do it: with a showstopping performance at the BET awards.
H.E.R’s ridiculous talents
Most of us can just about manage Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the piano, so you can imagine our collective amazement (and jealousy) when H.E.R decided to take on every instrument during her performance. Talent, as they say, is God-given.
All Aboard the Lil Nas X Train
…the next stop? Dreamland. Which, by the looks of it, is where Lil Nas takes everyone whenever he speaks or performs. When it comes to being your authentic self – and doing so flawlessly – we can’t think of anyone who does it better. It helps, too, when you’re as talented as they come – and good looking, too. To cap it off, he shared a kiss with a backup dancer, cementing his status as a glass-ceiling breaking performer. How’s that, for Pride.
There’s Only One Queen Latifah
When Queen Latifah started her music career, most readers (we suspect) weren’t around. For over 30 years,she’s rapped, danced, sang and acted her way to the top, proving her ability to capture the hearts of fans and artists alike. So when the BET gave her the Lifetime Achievement Award, few would have been surprised.
We All Want to Be Silk Sonic
Bruno Mars is a pretty talented guy. We’re not exactly telling you anything new. Add Anderson Paak and a few soulful singers to the mix, however, and you have something pretty special. Everything about their performance was magical. And as for those suits, anyone know where we can grab a few? (asking for a friend…)
Tyler, Tyler, Tyler
Tyler the Creator just does whatever Tyler the Creator wants to do. Simple, really. So when, for his BET performance, he chose to use everything from a Rolls Royce to strong winds, the show’s producers must’ve wondered exactly where he was going. It was all just very Tyler, in a good way.
