So much for a sun-soaked summer. Still, the UK isn’t all doom and gloom – here’s our guide to the coolest spots to holiday at home.
Another year, another staycation. After last summer, many packed away their tent hoping to not see it again for a quite some time. But with Boris announcing a very limited green list for holidays abroad – Portugal, anyone? – we may be reaching for the tent again sooner than we hoped. That doesn’t mean UK vacays should be dreaded, though. We’ve compiled a list of all the hottest (not quite) destinations for you to ‘jet’ off to this summer, without crossing international borders.
In need of a city-break?
If you’re sick of being locked inside (who isn’t?) then a trip to a new city might be the vacay for you. What better way to experience some normality than a bustling street of cafes, shops and restaurants? These locations might not be Barcelona or Amsterdam, but they put up a pretty good fight when it comes to the perfect city-break.
Bristol
If you want to keep it southern, Bristol is the place to be. Often described as England’s up-and-coming city, it provides all the vibes for a chilled weekend away. With lots of edgy bars and cool art galleries, Bristol is the perfect city-break for young people – which is all of us, right? It’s definitely worth a shot, and we’re pretty confident you won’t regret it.
Edinburgh
Don’t be reluctant to head up north. Edinburgh is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. Combining a medieval Old Town with Georgian architecture, it’s a city like no other – and when you want to escape the urban chaos, head up Arthur’s Seat for 360-degree views of Scotland’s capital.
Manchester
Whether you’re heading up to Manchester with the boys, the girls, the family or whoever it may be, this city has everything you need for a guaranteed good time. There’s no doubt that Manchester is definitely home to some of the country’s best bars, with areas like The Northern Quarter and Spinningfields taking the reins for nightlife. It’s pretty much London, but half the price – so it’s a win-win, in our book.
For the adventurers
Calling all thrill-seekers, adrenaline-junkies and lovers of life. If you’re craving an adventure, these are the UK holiday spots for you.
The Lake District
What better way to get those much-needed endorphins flowing than kayaking across the largest natural lake in England, Lake Windermere? If kayaking isn’t your thing, though, why not try canoeing, open water swimming, mountain biking or archery? Well known for its clear skies and impressive scenery, the open countryside of the Lake District could be the place to go this summer.
Snowdon
Fancy a challenge? Snowdon might be all you’ve been looking for. It’s the highest mountain in Wales and provides some pretty sick views. If you’re thinking of taking on the summit, though, make sure to do your research – we’ve heard it can get a little bit chilly at the top. Whilst you’re there, you may as well take on the longest zipwire in Europe, too.
The closest you can get to being abroad
We all know that British weather can never be guaranteed. But if all you’re craving is some sun, sea and sand, these UK beach spots are your best bet.
Cornwall
It might be slightly obvious, but Cornwall is probably the place to be if you want to feel like you’re anywhere but the UK. (Usually) blessed with somewhat tropical temps, the best beaches in the country and beautiful villages, there’s no wondering why Cornwall has always been a summer favourite with the Brits.
Jurassic Coast
Head west along the Cornish beaches and you’ll find yourself at the Jurassic Coast. Famous for the stone arch, Durdle Door, you only need a little google image search to be tempted to visit this site of natural beauty. And you never know, you might even find yourself a fossil?
So, what are you waiting for? It might be a little while until we have free roam of the globe again, but until then, these UK destinations will definitely help fight those holiday blues.
