Words by Azul Counts

Few people have a better, well-rounded sense of style than Lewis Hamilton.

When he’s not burning rubber at 200mph, Lewis Hamilton can regularly be seen turning heads with impeccable style. Over the years, F1’s leading man has more than proved himself a bit of a style icon, sporting looks that often eschew conventional rules. On matters of style and fashion, the 37-year-old champion is in pole position.

Here, we detail the style lessons to learn from one of the world’s most stylish men:

When in doubt, co-ords will always do the job

If there’s one style lesson to pick up from Hamilton, it’s this: co-ords are – and forever will be – cool. Plus, given they’re fairly easy to put together – it is one colour, after all – you’ll be out and about looking cool in no time. Post lockdown, Hamilton’s stepping out in more co-ord looks than we care to count, and he can regularly be seen donning various designer numbers. Retro plaids? It works. Camo? Never seen anything cooler. Hamilton’s tried it all (so you don’t have to).

Hats, hats, alotta hats

That has and always will be essential for any aspiring fashionista. For Hamilton, it offers the chance to inject some much-needed streetwear style into his pre-race pounds. Outside Formula One, he can often be seen completing his more stylish outfits with a nice bucket hat.

Like him, use the hat to add a bit of flair to your outfits – especially when stepping around town.

Check yo’ self

Big checks are back, big time – and we couldn’t be happier. As proved by Hamilton, they’re ridiculously cool. And better yet, they’re capable of elevating the most basic of outfits. The checkered, in particular, can always be relied on to draw some compliment. Be careful not to overdo it, though. When donning checks, opt for complimentary monotone colours.

Shades matter

It’s no use having good style if your accessory game is off. And off Hamilton’s is not. The 37-year-old has a collection of sunglasses worth the admiration of any style enthusiast. From classic, elegant pairs to quirky options, his collection of sunglasses are as much a fashion statement as any other part of his outfit. Like him, pay close attention to frames – there’s nothing flattering about the wrong shape for the wrong face. And for extra points, shop around for shades that match your outfits.

Hey man, what’s that on your wrist?

Timepieces are special, special things. And when it comes to Hamilton, I’m inclined to think back to Ian Flemming’s famous words: “A gentleman’s timepiece says as much about him, as does his Saville Row suit.” On and off the track, he’s demonstrated a taste for the best, most respected watch brands in the industry. From showing up to a press conference wearing numerous IWCs to sporting a stunning Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, Formula One’s leading man’s proved that when it comes to time-pieces, he knows what he’s doing.

Ain’t no such thing as too much bling

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend – but they also happen to be Hamilton’s, too. Never to be seen without the brightest, fanciest pieces of ice, the 37-year-old’s jewellery game is as impressive as it gets. Given that, you can understand his annoyance when the FIA introduced some pretty irrelevant jewellery, effectively banning him and other drivers from wearing their chosen accessories when driving. His creation? He showed wearing multiple chains, rings, and iconic timepieces – proving that Lewis Hamilton’s style is on point.
