What to Watch on Netflix This Month

Words by Chanelle Goddard

From comic geniuses to artful robberies, we pick the best movies and TV shows to settle down with on Netflix this month.

As another month of lockdown rolls by, Netflix’s already-lengthy roster of great content is getting better and better. Whether you prefer fast-paced action thrillers, comic masterclasses or intriguing accounts of real-life events, we’ve put together a list of the best movies and TV shows the streaming service has to offer in April:

This Is a Robbery

Investigative true-crime drama series’ are as much of a hit today as they were decades ago – and to be honest, given our tendency to think we all have an inner Sherlock Holmes locked away, it’s no surprise streaming sites keep producing them. The latest instalment on Netflix, This is a Robbery, is a four-part limited series focusing on one of the most notorious robberies in history.

Expect deception, high stakes and unsolved mysteries: This is a Robbery is available to stream on Netflix April 7.

Thunder Force

Directed by Ben Falcone, Thunder Force is the perfect combination of action and comedy. Starring the talented duo of Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy, it tells the tale of two childhood best friends who reunite to form, well, a ‘thunder force’ – and with such a lineup, it’s bound to produce a few giggles.

Thunder Force is available to stream on Netflix April 4.

Dark City Beneath the Beat

Dark City Beneath the Beat is a feel-good music documentary that reflects and celebrates the infectious and lively beats of the Baltimore club scene. By telling this tale, the makers of the documentary do well to highlight the strong bond between music and the Baltimore community.

Dark City Beneath the Beat is available now on Netflix.

ZERO

Foreign-language Netflix shows are a frequent hit with audiences in the US and UK – and for good reason, too. They’re well-made and thoroughly authentic, with gripping storylines and huge acting talents on display. This new Italian original series, then, is sure to be equally received. ZERO follows a young teenager coming to terms with his newly discovered power, responsibilities to his neighbourhood and new life as a superhero.

ZERO is available to stream on Netflix April 21.

Two Distant Strangers

This 29-minute Oscar-nominated short film follows the story of Carter James, a man stuck in a constant time-loop which forces him to relieve a deadly run-in with a police officer. With many visits to the same scene, James has time to make little changes, allowing him to potentially avoid a fatal end result.

Two Distant Strangers is available to stream on Netflix April 9.
