As part of our new Discover Weekly series, we highlight the music of Manchester-born R&B artist [ K S R ].
Manchester singer [ K S R ] has been developing his unique blend of R&B and soul since he began making music in 2017. Influenced by artists such as Miguel, Frank Ocean, D’Angelo, Erykah and more, [ K S R ] continues to push boundaries within the music scene with his distinguished, smooth melodies and authentic sound.
His music career began as a teenager in the Manchester United Foundation Choir, and he started to write and produce his own songs at 17. Alongside his music, he helps involve young people in music and sport when working with Manchester City as a youth coach.
2019 was the year [ K S R ] embarked on his first headline tour, after releasing his debut album, Unfiltered, and it’s no surprise he managed to sell out his shows in London and Manchester. After months of lockdown in 2020, his new single, “Stylin”, was released in August, and is a more intimate song about who he is and where he’s from.
In an interview with Busk Music, [ K S R ] described his sound as a reflection of who he is as a person – subtle, warm, and relaxed. My personal favourite tracks of his are “My Lady”, “Sweet” and “Stylin” – all three are equally as unique and are great examples of his honeyed R&B sound, with a mix of jazz and soul in there too.
His music is in the style of ‘bedroom’ soul; a perfect balance of lo-fi hip-hop and R&B. This can be credited in part to Zac Schram, the creator, but reminds me of sounds similar to Frank Ocean and Brad Stank. The production is elegant, classic and sultry, allowing [ K S R ]’s soulful voice to dance underneath a beautiful, often muted, solo saxophone.
