How Rihanna Sparked a Maternity Fashion Revolution

How Rihanna Sparked a Maternity Fashion Revolution

Words by Shayni Solanki

There was a time that you’d never have seen a celebrity caught in tight-fitting dresses whilst pregnant, but that was before Rihanna decided to change maternity fashion for the better.

Pregnant women didn’t always feel comfortable accentuating their baby bump but, what was once the norm, is no more (thank God).  Pregnant women deserve to feel proud of their baby bump and able to show it off.

Something in maternity fashion changed when Rihanna revealed her pregnancy. The fashion mogul wasn’t ever going to hide her figure under baggy dresses or oversized men’s clothes, instead forcing brands to finally fully cater to pregnant women’s figures and proving that maternity fashion doesn’t fit into one baggy bag. Pregnancy suddenly became styleable and fashionable.

Her pregnancy reveal was nothing short of iconic. A pink Chanel coat unbuttoned to show the baby bump, jewels dangling on her bump – it was all too amazing. Ever since her first pregnancy she’s consistently served look after look.

ASOS is one of the many brands using their maternity line to create comfortable but fashionable pieces for pregnant women. What makes their line stand out are their options across both baggy and tight fits, ranging from knit co-ords, midi dresses, and jumpsuits, all the way to swimwear.

We’ve finally reached a point where women can be rest-assured that they’ll find maternity wear to match their own style. We’ve come so far from the time where it was baggy or nothing (just ask 90s mums).
